Empowerment of Human Capital & Long-term Value Creation in Research Infrastructure & Core Facilities

Keynote address by Julia Fernandez-Rodriguez, Head of the Centre for Cellular Imaging Core Facility at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, and President of the Core Technologies for Life Sciences (CTLS) Association. Julia speaks about the value of human capital empowerment in research infrastructure including case studies of extraordinary achievements in research using core facilities. Julia Graduated (1989) in Biology from the University Santiago de Compostela (Spain), and received her PhD (1996) in Biochemistry from the University of Vigo (Spain). With a background in Cell and Molecular Biology, she oversees an open-access Correlative Multimodal Imaging Facility that integrates multiple imaging technologies and image analysis into a single core, ensuring technical and scientific excellence. With over 22 years of experience in launching, implementing, and managing research infrastructures and training activities at both the National and International levels, she is dedicated to fostering the next generation of microscopists. She achieves this through supervising core internships and ERASMUS students in bioimaging, promoting future career possibilities within core facility work. Beyond her local responsibilities, she actively contributes to the European imaging community, serving on the Steering Committee of the European Light Microscopy Initiative (ELMI), being a member of The Global BioImage Analysts’ Society (GloBIAS), and participating as a partner in the EU-funded project Research Infrastructure Training (RItrainPlus). She is also deeply engaged in the Nordic Microscopy Society (SCANDEM) and the Bridging Nordic Microscopy Infrastructure (BNMI) as a member of their respective boards. Moreover, she lends expertise to various national and international scientific advisory boards and expert review panels, further solidifying her commitment to advancing the field of imaging research. Through these multifaceted roles, she is instrumental in recruiting and nurturing the next generation of microscopists, ensuring the long-term success of her facility and the University of Gothenburg's imaging initiatives.
