The tongue is tense, high, and the sides of the tongue touch the inside of the back teeth. /ə/ as in MUSTARD: known as the schwa, it is the most common vowel sound in spoken English. It is a quick, relaxed neutral vowel sound. It sounds like UH. /eɪ/ as in GRAY: a diphthong - or moving- sound - made up of two different target mouth positions and sounds. When making the GRAY vowel sound the lips are relaxed, not rounded and the mouth is slightly open. The tongue moves from a mid-high to high position as the jaw moves up.
