Nerve injury can occur at any level. In my practice at JIS Orthopedics I see traumatic lacerations with nerve injuries in the arm, forearm, wrist and hand often. Occasionally I see patients like the one featured in this video with a more central nerve issue. This patient presented to me with undiagnosed severe cervical spine disease. The patient's only symptoms was loss of muscle in and use of his hand. After we appropriately treated his cervical spine it was time to restore the function of his hand. This was done with an out patient surgical procedure in which two tendons from the palm were split in half and transferred to 4 locations in the back of the hand. To restore thumb function, I performed a second tendon transfer in which an extra tendon to the index finger (EIP Tendon) was transferred to the thumb. Great results not only take meticulous surgical technique but also a motivated patient with an excellent occupational therapist. This patient is 3 months from surgery and already demonstrating excellent use of his hand.
