Some Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memories (EPROM) on Component Close-Up today. Once, this was a common sight in 8-bit home computers of the 1980s, but today it's almost entirely superseded by Flash memory. The 2716 chip holds 2048 bytes (2k) of data, while the larger 27128 holds 16k and the 27C4001 holds 512k. The chips are programmed (written) by a special EPROM programming gadget, and erased by Ultra-Violet (UV) light through the round window in the chip packaging. Erasure takes several minutes, and the chip must be removed from the computer for both UV erasure and reprogramming. All of these EPROMs are 8-bit, although a few later types were available with a 16-bit data bus.
