(12 May 1999) Eng/Albanian/Nat Despite increasing pressure on the U-N-H-C-R to move refugees away from the Albanian border, the agency says its attempts to move ethnic Albanians are proving unsuccessful. Camps in Kukes are overcrowded and dangerously close to border clashes, but refugees say they want to stay near their homeland. New arrivals in Kukes however, complain they are not being given accommodation and are forced to sleep outside until trucks move them out to other camps. The recent arrivals in Kukes, on the Albanian border, are keen to be placed in camps elsewhere. These transit refugees have been sleeping outside. Some shelter has been provided by the U-N-H-C-R, but it's not enough. SOUNDBITE: (Albanian) "Tonight I will sleep in the big tent but for two nights I was forced to sleep outside." SUPER CAPTION: Berisha, refugee These people want to leave, but don't have the means to do so. For those who are on the move, they face other problems. They're worried about being separated from family and friends. SOUNDBITE: (Albanian) "We only have room for 20 to 30 people on each truck. We cannot get everybody on." SUPER CAPTION: Vox Pop, police officer SOUNDBITE: (Albanian) "There are other people on this truck who are not with us. We all want to get on this one." SUPER CAPTION: Vox Pop, refugee SOUNDBITE: (English) "You cannot expect every person to follow every person he wants. There is a family size of, for instance, 14 persons, and they always go together and we always succeed (in) that. It happens that neighbours want to go together but as you can see we don't have enough transportation." SUPER CAPTION: Jette Gottlieb, UNHCR Field Officer Others simply do not want to leave. SOUNDBITE: (Albanian) "We don't want to move from this camp but if they force us to we will have to go." SUPER CAPTION: Diabera Agushi, refugee For some, their tractors and vehicles make travelling difficult, while others fear worse conditions in a new camp, and the majority do not want to move far from their homeland. And the U-N-H-C-R says its attempts to move refugees away from the Albanian border are proving unsuccessful. SOUNDBITE: (Albanian) "We are not being successful in convincing refugees to leave here because they are worried about conditions in the other camps." SUPER CAPTION: Sali Nuhiu, Kosovan UNHCR Field Official Its workers have been touring the camps asking refugees if they are willing to be relocated. The camps are overcrowded and dangerously close to border clashes. But refugees say they want to stay near the border. SOUNDBITE: (Albanian) "I think they will return to Kosovo as soon as possible. This is because they want to be close to the border, to Kosovo." SUPER CAPTION: Sali Nuhiu, Kosovan UNHCR Field Official Some 2-thousand refugees were moved away from the Kukes refugee camp on Tuesday. U-N-H-C-R estimates some 780-thousand people, the vast majority of them ethnic Albanians, have fled or been driven out of Kosovo since NATO began airstrikes against Yugoslavia on March 24th. Macedonia now hosts more than 230-thousand refugees. Relief organisations said on Wednesday evacuations of Kosovar refugees from the former Yugoslav republic need to be speeded up.
