Hong Kong's light pollution is among the worst in the world. Looking at a light pollution map, almost everywhere in Hong Kong is red with only a few amber regions. This makes astrophotography, Milky Way photography, or seeing the night sky stars in general near impossible already. Whenever I show some photos of the milky way to people or social media, a lot are unaware that this was possible in Hong Kong. On this vlog, I talk about some considerations I take when I go out for milky way and night sky photography while hiking up Hong Kong's 2nd tallest mountain, Lantau Peak. This place was chosen because the area is still with visible light pollution, but enough to capture some of the Milky Way. I also use new filters I bought, the Kase Star Glow filter. Light pollution has many consequences that we probably do not think about on a day to day basis, this is on top of being just able to appreciate the beauty of our night sky. By having cities blasting bright lights at night, this impacts our natural body rhythms and affect the quality of our sleep (just imagine how much longer it takes for you to get to sleep after scrolling through your phone, now apply that to living in a metropolis). Light pollution also impacts our environment and wildlife by confusing certain animals whose behaviors rely on the night sky, such as migratory birds or sea turtles. I am not an expert on the topic but hope to become more aware and make smarter choices. Once I am more informed about the matter, I will try to share more knowledge about it.
