According to classical physics, light is an electromagnetic wave that travels through space at a constant speed of 299,792,458 meters per second (often rounded to 3.0 x 10^8 m/s). This theory, known as classical electromagnetism, was developed in the 19th century by James Clerk Maxwell and is based on the idea that light is a self-propagating wave of electric and magnetic fields that oscillate perpendicular to each other and to the direction of the wave's propagation. On the other hand, according to quantum physics, light can also behave like a particle, known as a photon. In quantum mechanics, light is described as a stream of discrete particles that carry energy and momentum. The energy of a single photon is proportional to its frequency, and the momentum of a photon is proportional to its wavelength. This dual nature of light, as both a wave and a particle, is known as wave-particle duality, and it is one of the key concepts of quantum mechanics. Both the wave and particle nature of light are necessary to explain many of the phenomena observed in nature, including the photoelectric effect, which was the basis for the development of quantum mechanics in the early 20th century.
