What could cross the mind of a young man to join the Roman legion? Undoubtedly, the dreams of adventure, battles, glory, or then again, a prestigious status and assured income. For 25 years, he would have to serve the Empire - perhaps at the cost of his life…Yet, the young recruit’s dreams of conquest were soon dashed. Indeed, during the first two centuries of our era, wars were rare: the Roman Empire enjoyed a period of stability known as the Pax Romana. Still, the borders - stretching for 7,500 kilometers - had to be defended and internal security ensured. After being recruited, the young soldier has to spend several months learning how to use weapons. On the training field, he meets seasoned legionaries - some of whom have served the Empire for 20 years already and who will be veterani (Latin for veterans) in a few years. Once formed, the legionary is sent to remote areas of the Empire as to guard the frontiers, or joins the garrisons of major cities.
