This video serves a dual purpose: first, I've honed my video and audio skills (though I admit, the lighting still needs work), and second, I'm shedding light on a common issue we face right here in Georgia. Georgia may be known for its lush greenery, but it also comes with a power problem. Those pesky above-ground power lines and countless trees mean we experience power outages almost weekly. Sometimes it's a minor inconvenience, lasting only minutes, but occasionally, it drags on for a grueling 50 hours. In response, almost every room in our house is equipped with a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply). I've even invested in a generator for those long outages. However, running thick extension cables throughout the house isn't practical for every room. That's where this DIY project comes in. I had an old UPS gathering dust for over a decade, but its 4.5 amp-hour battery was no good. So, I decided to swap it out with a 9 amp-hour deep cycle battery – problem solved. And then, as luck would have it, a neighbor down the street was giving away an 18 amp-hour battery for free. He had mistakenly bought it for his generator, and it didn't fit, so he gifted it to me. That's when the real fun began. I turned this simple 450 into a powerhouse. I removed the old battery, added a port for an external battery, and custom-built a cable for it. I might even add a second port for hot-swapping batteries in the future - I'm always thinking ahead! Now, let's see it in action. I've got it plugged in, and I'll disconnect it from the wall. Notice how the lights stay on? Now, I'll remove the battery, and it powers down. It's truly awesome. But the real kicker is that this setup is dedicated to keeping our fiber internet alive. You know how vital it is to keep the fiber modem electrified on the side of the house. With this big battery, we have a solid five to six days of continuous internet - no more connectivity headaches. And, of course, we have other units throughout the house to keep our routers and mesh network in check. So, there you have it – a simple yet ingenious solution to a common problem.
