Penduline Tit - Remiz pendulinus - buidelmees / foraging in broadleaf cattail (Typha latifolia). Close-up footage showing this remarkable wetland bird hunting insect larvae in cattail plumes. Recorded in Torhout, Flanders, Belgium — March 2, 2026 All footage is real. The Eurasian penduline tit (Remiz pendulinus) is often seen actively foraging on broadleaf cattail (Typha latifolia). This wetland plant provides an important microhabitat for many insects, including the larva of the Shy Cosmet moth (Limnaecia phragmitella). The larvae of Limnaecia phragmitella live concealed within the fluffy seed heads (“plumes”) of the cattail, where they feed and develop in relative safety. By carefully probing and picking through the cattail plume, the penduline tit searches for these protein-rich larvae and other small invertebrates. Such specialized foraging behavior highlights the species’ fine bill control and its close ecological association with reedbed and cattail habitats. This interaction illustrates a small but fascinating wetland food-web link: cattails host insect larvae, and the penduline tit, in turn, exploits this hidden food resource during its meticulous feeding bouts.
