Senior Music Composition Competition 2023 Contemporary Category Highly Commended Work Crafter by Vini Mishra Covered up in spirals, the oily design/Some of the fingerprints are not mine But for the most part, you say we choose our sight/ Pushed in my fingertips until I had black holes for eyes. Crafter is a song about the exhaustion of feeling like every part of yourself is broken,, and that it’s all your fault. It uses the metaphor of the self being a clay figurine, marred by the imprints of other people and experiences that make it cracked and fragile, and it’s about the haze of self-dislike and apathy this can often cause. I used multiple harmonies for the vocals to create the feeling of someone who’s disconnected, someone struggling to see any good in themselves. The song does not have a chorus or repeating verses, it is an amalgamation of clouded, suffocating thoughts. Two electric guitar tracks were used amongst multiple synth layers and reverbed drums to create a lush, heavy soundscape, reflecting upon the feelings of dissociation and numbness expressed in this song. The sense of chaos increases towards the middle of the track, during an instrumental solo for the guitars where the previous vocal verse is distorted and played in reverse amongst several other vocal and instrumental layers. However, I used an FX overlay towards the end to reflect the change in mood. The speaker sings about how they’ve failed at important things, but are told they are more than their mistakes. And though they don’t believe that yet, they’ll try to accept it. This song was interesting to mix and pan due to the large number of tracks and reverb. However, I really enjoyed experimenting and creating a soundscape and learning more about sound production. I hope my song brings understanding to anyone who has ever felt this way.
