In this lecture, we think about some key forms of populist messaging, focusing in particular on: (i) rhetorical strategies employed by populists being emotive language, using archetypal structuring of political messages, employing ‘us’ vs ‘them’, using personal insults, including conspiracism and the construction of a parallel reality, permanent electioneering, dog-whistling, and exaggeration as authenticity; (ii) Le Bon’s writing on appealing to emotion rather than addressing issues; (iii) Jungian archetypes and their relevance to political populism; (iv) Marco Morini’s discussion of exaggeration as the ‘language of the home’ employed by populist politicians; (v) the abundance and algorithmic nature of news today creating ‘echo chambers’; (vi) the alignment of populism with social media due to its simplification requirement and the outrage/exaggeration attraction. – This lecture is part of a larger course exploring populism: massolit.io/courses/political-populism?source=yt – MASSOLIT works with university academics to produce short video lectures in the arts, sciences, humanities and social sciences.
