Splatterhouse: Wanpaku Graffiti is the adorable kid Brother of one of the most notorious beat-em-up series in video games. A chibi, kawaii action platformer that is completely loaded with nods to other horror franchises of the 1980s including Evil Dead 2, Alien, and some movie about a crazy killer in a hockey mask-but the name escapes me. Splatterhouse: Wanpaku Graffiti also holds the distinction of being the first Splatterhouse game available for home consoles, releasing exclusively for the Nintendo Famicom in 1989. Wanpaku Graffiti wouldn't see an official U.S. release until 2020, as part of the Namcot collection, or Namco Museum Archive as it was known in the U.S., for the Nintendo Switch. As far as retro games go, it's difficult to find a more noteworthy series of beat-em-ups than Splatterhouse. While this adorable hack and slasher strays from the rudimentary brawler feel of its big brother in the arcade and PC-Engine, Wanpaku Graffiti still holds its own and has cultivated a cult following among Splatterhouse enthusiasts. But don't take my word for it! See what I think about Splatterhouse: Wanpaku Graffiti! This video is part of a series of video game video essays about obscure retro games.
