COWS and CLOUDS Cloud Studies the Drill This week we look at creating lost and found edges so that our clouds look more natural. We use a spot wetting technique in watercolor to achieve this. This exercise hones our skills with watercolor and builds our awareness to the water/ paint ratios. Also we encounter the challenge of timing - working with some speed to take advantage of the still wet paper. The Technique To create the lost and found edge we are drawing a brush through both damp paper and dry paper so that the mark dissolves in one instance and remains firm in another. The combination of edges is a way we create the feeling of form and the sensation of atmosphere. This begins without much drawing - perhaps a few directionals. Then we apply a pattern of cloud shapes as though we were painting the clouds themselves. This is done with a pale color (pale enough that we can see it and paint in-between these cloud shapes when the time comes)we follow this with an application of blue sky between the clouds reveling the cloud shapes with the addition of lost and found edges It helps to mix the color before you start so that you can add the color quickly without rushing and take advantage of the wet paper The challenge We use patterns to create our cloud shapes - this is a difficult part of out design technique - It helps to avoid coping the clouds to directly. I like to look intently for a moment and then stop looking at the clouds and try to visualize them on the paper with the light color - if I get something different I go with that and keep my eyes on the paper. Once we have the cloud shapes we follow with the blue of the sky. Deeper blue higher in the sky weaker as it reaches the horizon. The cloud shapes emerge as you are painting and it is helpful to avoid copying the cloud but rather let it emerge from your own painting. It will look much better in the end
