British Columbia has had an amazing transformation. From a tough, vice-ridden frontier during its gold rush, to being marketed, at the end of the 1950s, as more English than England. There’s cricket on the lawn, butlers and crumpets. Hotel sign advertise “quaint” rooms. One entrepreneur, Sam Lane, has re-built William Shakespeare’s home just outside Victoria, and filled it with seven tonnes of finest Olde English history, all of it unrelated to Shakespeare. It is, Sam says, preferable to "the encroachment of Americanism, with its rather superficial commercialism." Clip taken from 120, originally broadcast on BBC Television, Monday 9 June, 1958. You have now entered the BBC Archive, a time machine that will transport you back to the golden age of TV to educate, entertain and enlighten you with classic clips from the BBC vaults.
