British Columbia has had an amazing transformation. From a tough, vice-ridden frontier during its gold rush, to being marketed, at the end of the 1950s, as more English than England. There’s cricket on the lawn, butlers and crumpets. Hotel sign advertise “quaint” rooms. One entrepreneur, Sam Lane, has re-built William Shakespeare’s home just outside Victoria, and filled it with seven tonnes of finest Olde English history, all of it unrelated to Shakespeare.
