Exterior blast site STORYLINE: The death toll for the car bomb in Jakarta near the Australian embassy has risen to eight. More than 160 people were wounded. Police immediately blamed Jemaah Islamiyah, the Southeast Asian terror network that is linked to al-Qaida. The group has been accused of several deadly bombings, including the bombing of the J.W. Marriott hotel in the same neighbourhood last year, in which 12 people were killed. About a dozen Australians were slightly injured, mostly by flying glass, an embassy spokeswoman said. The bomb flattened the gate of the mission and caused minor damages to the periphery of the heavily fortified building, mangled cars and motorbikes on the street and shattered scores of windows in nearby high-rise shopping centres. Police chief General Dai Bachtiar said it was a car bomb that bore the hallmark of Jemaah Islamiyah. President Megawati Sukarnoputri was in neighbouring Brunei on Thursday attending a royal wedding, but cut short her stay to return to Jakarta after learning about the explosion. Megawati toured the bomb site and two hospitals where most of the victims were being treated.
