Sonata for Recorder Player and Piano: "Earth-Stepper" was composed by Andrew Glover in May-July 2013. It is based loosely on the text of the Anglo-Saxon poem, entitled 'Eardstepa' which has been translated as 'The Wanderer' but more accurately translates as 'Earth-Stepper.' It tells the story and emotions of a distraught warrior who has lost his 'Ring-giver' (lord) that he served in battle along with his fellow 'thegns' (warriors) and is now an outcast from society and wanders the seas trying to find solace in a new lord's service, but to no avail. The text of the poem that appears in the video above, and here, provides the inspiration for the first movement. It comes from Kevin Crossley-Holland's translation. “Then his wounds lie more heavy in his heart, aching for his lord. His sorrow is renewed: the memory of kinsmen sweeps through his mind: joyfully he welcomes them, eagerly scans his comrade warriors. Then they swim away again. Their drifting spirits do not bring many old songs to his lips. Sorrow upon sorrow attend the man who must send time and again his weary heart over the fron waves.” The piece is written for the treble recorder, one of the most popular and familiar recorders. The piece is performed by Caroline Jones (recorder) and Charles Matthews (piano), for whom it was composed.
