In the debut episode of The YourShelf Podcast, The Poetic Pop Premiere, our chief curator Juliano Zaffino (Jay) sits down with Florence Welch (of Florence and the Machine) and Rebecca Lucy Taylor (of Self Esteem) to discuss books and the music industry, all through the lens of their personal brands of poetic pop. Florence and Rebecca discuss songwriting and poetry, producing music as women in a male-dominated industry, the importance of personal lyrics, listening to and believing in women, young women "radiating" with feminism, and female solidarity in the industry. Florence and Rebecca share their favourite of each other's lyrics, and talk about what they've been reading recently. Of course we want to clarify this, but we also feel it is important to clarify the context of Jay's remarks. Firstly, YourShelf would never intentionally misgender anyone - Jay was referring specifically to an interview Björk gave with Pitchfork in 2015 (https://pitchfork.com/features/interv..., in which Björk herself is talking about this sexism within the music industry and how it applies to her work/its reception. Björk refers to Arca as "he", and at the time Arca identified as such. It is important to note that Björk's argument, that male-identifying producers received more credit for her work than she did in the press etc, still stands, as at the time Arca identified as (and was perceived by the press as) male. Arca even spoke out about it at the time. But of course the issue is a little more nuanced now with hindsight! So thank you to BooksAndBurgers for bringing this to our attention so carefully and politely; there was no ill intent from YourShelf with this oversight.
