This beautiful alpine lake is proof that even a small lake can be one of California's best. Pinecrest is popular for slow-speed boating, fishing, swimming, camping and hiking. The 4-mile trek around the lake is almost a required initiation for first-timers. A great marina offers boat rentals, nearby stores have supplies, and lodges offer a variety of accommodations. Pinecrest Lake is located a half-hour's drive east of Sonora in the Stanislaus National Forest. Bennett Juniper. This extraordinary tree is under Save the Redwoods’ protection in California’s Stanislaus National Forest because The Nature Conservancy conveyed it and the surrounding buffering land to us in 1987. Before then, rancher JW Martin Sr. protected the tree until donating it and the surrounding three acres in 1978 to The Nature Conservancy. History The tree is named after naturalist Clarence Bennett, who began his study of the western juniper (Juniperus occidentalis) in the early 1890s. Then, the tree was still referred to as a shrub. Juniper “shrubs” reached heights of 50 to 70 feet and core samplings showed many to be at least 1,000 years old. Bennett made field observations of the western juniper from Oregon to Mexico, collecting fallen branches as he went. When he returned from the field, he counted the core rings and made meticulous measurements to ascertain ages and growth rates of the trees. In 1932, longtime Tuolumne county rancher, Ed Burgeson, led Bennett to this location and showed Bennett a large western juniper that Basque sheepherders had discovered in the 1920s. The gnarled and weather-worn tree is more than 80 feet tall. The Bennett juniper and others of its species face freezing temperatures, strong winds, poor soil and low moisture, and still they persist and grow high in the Sierra Nevada. Trail of the Gargoyles Forest: Stanislaus National Forest District: Summit Ranger District Description: At the height of the summer flowering period, the Trail of the Gargoyles offers a wonderful variety of classic Sierran wildflowers among impressive geologic features. Lupins, mule’s ears, Sierra onion, Leichtlin’s mariposa lily, spreading phlox and sulphur buckwheat are among the showy plants to be found. There are two hiking trails, the North Rim Trail and the South Rim Trail, with numbered stops where the geologic features are interpreted in an informative guide available at the trailhead or the Summit Ranger District Office. Both trails are rated as easy hiking, with several moderately steep portions. Total trail distance is about 1.5 miles. Elevation at the trailhead is approximately 7,400 feet. Viewing Information: The peak bloom for wildflowers at this site takes place in early July. Safety First: Good walking shoes or boots are a must. Avoid getting too close to the cliffs for safety and also to prevent erosion of the delicate and loose soils. Rattlesnakes are sometimes found among the rocks. Directions: Take Highway 108 east of Pinecrest to Herring Creek Road. Turn right and follow Herring Creek Road for about 6 miles. Turn left at the Gargoyles sign and proceed a short distance to the parking area at the trailhead.
