Bird Bath Festival on my New DIY Garden Fountain

This solid cobalt-blue bird bath is the latest of three fountains I have made. Though the other two are easy to clean out with a bucket, soft brush and cloth, this one is by far the easiest. On the backside bottom of this cobalt-blue bath is a half-inch brass garden-hose spigot held in place with a stainless-steel pipe fitted with watertight rubber gaskets and brass compression nuts. To clean it out, the pump is shut off. The drainage spigot is turned on, and it empties out 15 gallons of used water on the tree behind it. The 20-pound topper is removed, and the inside of the porcelain pot is sprayed clean as well as the pump using a garden hose and nozzle. Afterwards, the spigot is turned to the off position, the cleaned topper is refitted with the water tubing connected to the pump and put back in place. It is refilled with tap water that comes chlorinated from our local water district. Common estimates of the effectiveness of chlorine at preventing many water-borne diseases is somewhere between 3 to 5 days for 15 gallons. The fountain runs 24/7 to prevent mosquito infestation, keep the water aerated and much cooler on hot days—it’s not advisable to allow fountain water to stagnate. In the heat of summer, fountains should be checked daily and refreshed often, in winter less so. Fountain water does not freeze in our area, which is located in zone 10A. Finally, this fountain was set up under a white mulberry tree, therefore, it receives very little direct summer sun and algae is not a problem. Keeping a fountain in the shade and away from the intense summer sun will definitely mitigate algae.
