What is the cocktail party effect? In the middle of a noisy party or any event with lots of sounds, we can focus on one conversation that we want. Our brain can “block-out” all other sounds. We can instantly hear someone call our name in a crowded and noisy place. This is an ability that has been found in infants as young as 5 months of age. This is due to something called the cocktail party effect. It is also called “selective hearing” or “selective attention”. And allows us to "tune into" a single voice and "tune out" all others. How does the cocktail party effect occur? The left side of our brain is more active when we filter relevant sounds from background noise. The cocktail party effect works best when hearing with both ears. People with only one functioning ear are more distracted by interfering noise. Using two ears allows localization of sound sources. Localization helps extract the signals of the sound source out of a mixture of interfering sound sources.
