Singapore's LRT Line | Sengkang LRT | A Full Tour of the LRT East & West Lines The Sengkang Light Rail Transit (LRT) system, inaugurated in 2003, is a crucial component of Singapore's comprehensive public transport network, serving the rapidly developing residential town of Sengkang in the northeastern region. Operated by SBS Transit, this fully automated, driverless elevated guideway transit line spans 10.7 kilometers and comprises 14 stations. It was strategically planned in tandem with the growth of the Sengkang estate, aiming to provide convenient intra-town connectivity and seamless integration with the wider Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) network via Sengkang MRT station on the North East Line. The Sengkang LRT is uniquely designed with two distinct, bidirectional loops: the East Loop and the West Loop. The East Loop, which commenced operations on January 18, 2003, was the first to open, reflecting the earlier development of its surrounding residential areas. This loop connects key areas like Compassvale, Rumbia, Bakau, Kangkar, and Ranggung, primarily serving residents in the eastern parts of Sengkang. It offers a vital feeder service, bringing commuters from various housing precincts directly to the integrated Sengkang Town Centre, where they can access the MRT, bus interchange, and commercial amenities. Conversely, the West Loop opened progressively, with initial stations beginning service on January 29, 2005, and the final station, Kupang, opening on June 27, 2015. This loop caters to the western sectors of Sengkang, encompassing stations such as Cheng Lim, Farmway, Kupang, Thanggam, Fernvale, Layar, Tongkang, and Renjong. As Sengkang continued its expansion westward, the West Loop became increasingly important in linking newer residential developments and providing residents with efficient access to the town centre and beyond. Both loops underwent significant upgrades, including modifications for two-car operations from 2016 to increase capacity during peak hours, and platform enhancements at Sengkang station, which began operations at the end of September 2024, further streamlining commuter flow and improving efficiency for this indispensable light rail system.
