In December 1942, British Commandos launched Operation Frankton, one of the most daring and dangerous raids of World War II. Using fragile, two-man folding kayaks—nicknamed “cockleshells”—a small team paddled deep into German-occupied Bordeaux with a single objective: sabotage vital enemy shipping. Facing freezing waters, powerful tides, German patrols, and near-impossible odds, the commandos pressed on in what became a mission of extraordinary bravery and devastating cost. While the raid succeeded in damaging multiple German vessels, most of the men involved were either killed or captured and executed. In this video, we break down how Operation Frankton was planned, how the raid unfolded step by step, and why the courage of the Cockleshell Heroes became legendary. It’s a story of innovation, sacrifice, and the brutal reality of special operations during WWII.
