Today's saying begins with a riddle in Proverbs 23, verse 29. See if you can figure it out: 29 Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaints? Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes? As the following verse tells us, the answer is "those who linger over wine." From time to time, we all have woes, sorrows, strife or complaints. The beginning of this riddle could be describing any one of us, but only a drunk has them all at once, along with needless bruises and bloodshot eyes. The point is that life is hard enough without adding "needless" problems to the pile. It is a simple riddle with an obvious answer, and it is meant to illustrate how obvious it is to everyone around you when you drink too much. Contrast that with how Christians are supposed to be perceived by the world. In Matthew 5, Jesus says they are the light of the world by which the people of this world see the goodness and glory of God. They can't do that with minds darkened by drunkenness. Instead, they are called to be sober-minded representatives of the light of Jesus Christ. This is another episode in the series entitled, "The Sayings of the Wise." Join father and son, Timothy and Caleb, while they explore the wisest sayings of the ancient world as recorded in the book of Proverbs. Find out why we all need to learn them and put them into practice. You're listening to Bible Discussions on @BiblocusWhere the Bible intersects with your life.
