A major win for West Palm Beach and the homeless crisis. A new effort to house the homeless successfully got 40 people off the streets and into their own apartments. The city of West Palm Beach and other community organizations worked to find a place where the homeless can live. "It's nice over here. I really like it," said Tracy Parham, a former homeless person. Parham, a grandmother and great-grandmother, is glad to have a roof over her head. "Ooh, it's a blessing and it feels good. I feel safe. I feel comfortable," she explained. Parham says she just moved in here on October 21. Before she got this one-bedroom apartment on Windsor Avenue in West Palm Beach, she was couch-surfing, staying with a friend or relative for a few days at a time or sleeping outdoors on the streets. "It's rough, especially for a woman 'cause you have to like sleep with one eye open like, you know. It's rough," Parham said. The city of West Palm Beach says with the efforts and teamwork of several city departments and other organizations, 40 chronically homeless individuals have been placed into stable, permanent housing. This is especially important now, because of a new law that took effect in Florida October 1, that bars cities and counties from allowing homeless people to sleep overnight in public places such as parks and sidewalks. "I love it, I am in heaven. I just, I'm so blessed. I love it," said Cynthia Deering, another former homeless woman. Deering also just moved into a one-bedroom apartment here last month. She says she was homeless for four years. "I don't feel threatened by anyone that lives here at all. They've been very kind. They're all in the same predicament I'm in," Deering said. John Kavanaugh, a veteran of the Marine Corps and another former homeless person, also just moved in to a one-bedroom apartment here. "I do appreciate the help. I wasn't doing well out there, physically or emotionally. It's nice to have a place to rest now," Kavanaugh said. We made repeated attempts to reach the city of West Palm Beach for comment about this location and the fact that they were able to get 40 homeless people off the streets. But they did not respond to calls and emails seeking comment.
