The State/Lake Station Reconstruction is a massive $180 million overhaul (part of a larger $440+ million infrastructure plan) designed to replace one of the oldest and busiest "L" stops in the Chicago Loop. Built originally in 1895, the station remained one of the final transit hubs in the downtown area that was not ADA accessible. The centerpiece of the new design is a striking, glass-and-steel "bird's nest" canopy that will provide wider, weather-protected platforms and a modern architectural landmark at the intersection of State and Lake Streets. The project is currently in a high-intensity phase of substructure and foundation work. Because the new station is significantly heavier and more complex than the 130-year-old original, crews must execute deep excavation and caisson drilling to support the new elevators and canopy. This requires the constant mobilization of heavy equipment through one of the city's most congested intersections, all while maintaining active train service on the tracks above. The "street rip" starting Monday marks a critical shift toward the heavy civil engineering needed to anchor the future of the North Loop’s transit.
