I love all sorts of jazz, but I am particularly fond of authentic 1920’s jazz. The problem I have had when I hear 20’s jazz recreated is that it doesn’t always sound right or totally of the era for me. I’ve posted here a clip from a short-lived TV show from 1958, Art Ford’s Jazz Party which was a weekly 90-minute program that only lasted 7 months. This segment features some of the original musicians that played alongside Louis Armstrong in the 1920’s- some of which actually hailed from New Orleans. The personnel include Lil Hardin Armstrong on piano, Red Allen on trumpet, Kid Ory on Trombone, Buster Baily on clarinet, Johnny St. Cyr on banjo, Milt Hinton on bass and Zutty Singleton on drums. Again, they weren’t all from New Orleans or originally played with Armstrong in the 20’s, but what a band to be heard in the 1950’s! This film I have posted starts out with a seemingly unrelated clip where Louis Armstrong introduces the great piano blues and boogie-woogie pianist Meade “Lux” Lewis who performs a great number, so just consider this segment to be an awesome bonus!
