Hip-Hop has arguably centered the male gaze since its birth 50 years ago. In doing so the artistic representation has flooded the marketplace with stereotypical depictions that evoke hypersexualized imagery accompanied by expressions of disdain and dehumanization of Black women. In recent years, women have been controlling the narrative but whether empowering or exploitative, the end product is eerily similar. Despite the similarities, they’re met with pointed chastisement and virtue policing of the artists. At the same time, we’re witnessing an insensitivity and distrust of Black women experiencing gender based, aggression and sexual exploitation within Hip-Hop and throughout the broader society, more recently defined as misogynoir. Is Hip-Hop a germinating ground for this phenomenon? In this #BHeard Town Hall, we ask if there’s a connection between the representations of Black women in Hip-Hop and the perception and treatment of Black women as a whole.
