In this video I introduce the site and explain some of the thinking behind this project. Mauna'ōhi Dryland Garden is a small backyard native plant garden experiment in Honolulu, Hawai'i. The site consists of a roughly 1/2 acre experimental reforestation plot on private property at around 120’ elevation on the lower flank of Mauna’ōhi Ridge (within Haha’ione Valley) on the leeward side of the island of O’ahu, Hawaii. Ideally, the adjacent upslope land which is owned and neglected by Bishop Estate, could also be restored, but for now efforts are focused within the small area. Not long ago in the grand scheme of things, this area was an incredibly diverse native tropical dryland forest habitat.. which has since been replaced by a novel ecosystem of entirely non-native species. Slash and burn agriculture, wild fires, introduced plants and animals, and subsequent neglect has resulted in total ecological collapse of the native habitat and degradation of the soils that once supported a native ecosystem. The goal of this project is to restore biodiversity and habitat by reintroducing native species, building earthworks that passively reduce erosion and increase biomass and soil formation, as well as recharge groundwater. Although the site is small, it'll hopefully act as a biodiversity hotspot, bridging the gap between other restoration sites in the area and reseeding adjacent lands with native species. It may also expand to include adjacent lands in the future.
