http://www.longplays.org Played by: MadMatty QueDex is the third game to be developed by Stavros Fasoulas and published by Thalamus in 1987 for the Commodore 64. The game was also released as Mindroll on the Amiga and PC in the US, developed by Silent Software and published by Epyx. Its not a direct port of QueDex, more an authorised conversion. “Only cool nerves, precision, sharp reflexes and a mastery of the joystick will see you through this mind-taxing array of planes. Time is against you, and so are the problems to solve. But then – yours is The Quest for Ultimate Dexterity.” After three shooters it’s time for a change with a puzzle challenge. The game consists of ten planes where the player steers a silvery ball and must find the goal at the end of each level. The name Quedex derives from the subtitle ‘The Quest for Ultimate Dexterity’ Just in case the sales pitch didn’t give it away. This isn’t a game I played often. While the game is well presented and only having 10 levels gives the illusion that its quite short, that timer can be really annoying and put you off playing. When the game starts you are presented with a pyramid. With a joystick in port 1 you can select whatever plane you want to start on while the game is played with a joystick in port 2. Weird I know! The idea is to get through all levels within a set time limit. Each level you finish earns you extra time. Interestingly the levels can get more difficult the longer they are left so for an optimal run you get start with the level you find most difficult and leave the levels that are to easy at the start until later. I do not know the most optimal route through the game and just play the levels in order for this Longplay. Level 8 in particular is frustrating as you can not take your time. The level is collapsing around you and extreme precision is needed to make it to the goal. Even when you know the route, just getting caught on a corner as you pass through a space can cause your run to end. As long as you have enough time in the tank you can keep playing the level until you get it though. Some levels require collecting items and just to add to the frustration, these are put in random places so each play of the level is different. After each level you get a bonus plane where you can earn extra time by playing a simple Simon type memory test. Also the game does end after the ten levels and doesn’t loop. I think we are entering a new era in overall presentation which includes game endings and thalamus is going to be there with the best of them on the C64. 00:00:00 Loader Music 00:03:55 Title Music 00:06:40 Level 1 00:07:50 Level 2 00:09:02 Level 3 00:09:58 Level 4 00:10:38 Level 5 00:12:04 Level 6 00:13:45 Level 7 00:14:40 Level 8 00:15:31 Level 9 00:17:20 Level 10 00:18:08 Ending
