Originally trained in design and painting, Japanese American artist Ruth Asawa became a pioneer of looped-wire sculpture—a radical and ever-modern innovation in the art world. During WWII she was forcibly interned, an experience that unexpectedly shaped her artistic path. At Black Mountain College, she studied with Josef Albers, Buckminster Fuller, and Merce Cunningham, while connecting with fellow artists including Robert Rauschenberg. Architect Albert Lanier, her future husband, was also part of this creative circle. Both an artist and activist, Asawa’s influence continues to resonate today, proving as vital and inspiring now as it was decades ago. 0:00 Introduction - Formative Memories 0:57 Discrimination 1:13 Pearl Harbor Bombing, Internment 1:30 First Drawing Class 2:03 Smithsonian Oral Archive 2:25 Drawing in the Air with Wire 2:48 First Show 3:04 New Work - Tied Wire Sculpture 3:18 Arts Activist 3:33 Commissioned Work 3:44 Re-discovered ________________ Follow/Connect: Instagram: / lauriebfrankel Medium: @LauriebFrankel YouTube: @AmazingLesserKnownArtists ________________ LIKE.
