Vat photopolymerization 3D printing builds three-dimensional parts by curing photoactivated material one point or layer at a time. A projector conveys UV light into the build material, usually a resin or slurry, in just the right configuration so that only the desired material is cured into a solid. In digital light processing (DLP) style printers which provide a full image layer at once, the resolution of the projection correlates to the accuracy and detail of the final part. At the Technical University of Denmark (Danmarks Tekniske Universitet or DTU), researchers have developed an open-source vat photopolymerization platform that supports various modifications to resolution, including swapping of lenses or even using the projection unit directly, at its native pixel size. DTU has also developed ways of introducing “grayscale” into prints, i.e., semi-cured pixels created with diffused light achieved with process control. This video summarizes the factors that affect resolution, including a look at the modifications possible with this open-source 3D printer.
