April 2017 - The amphitheater in Capua (only 8 miles from our house) is second largest in the world. It was originally 560 ft long, 460 ft wide and could hold 60,000 spectators. The arena floor is 246 ft by 148 ft. The Roman Colosseum in comparison was 615 ft long, 510 ft wide and could up to 80,000 spectators. Its arena floor is 287 ft by 180 ft. This amphitheater was built on the site of a more ancient one where the legendary gladiator Spartacus fought. The subterranean passages beneath the arena floor are amazingly well persevered. On the day of our visit, the amphitheater was almost empty. It was a great day to visit with the kids. They were able to run all around and explore all the different passageways.
