I couldnt beleive my ears when I heard this extremely toxic “skinnytok” video. The advice was so far from reality, so lets go over some TRUTHS about overweight and obesity: -they are multifactorial conditions that are influences by genetics, environmental, psychosocial and biologic factors -environmental factors include our highly processed, calorie dense modern day food system, limited access to fresh food, accessibility of fast food, and lack of safe means of physical activity -socioeconomic status, food insecurity, and poverty are strongly associated with obesity risk, partially due to chronic stress and limited healthy food access -adverse childhood experiences, trauma, and mental health issues are associated with higher obesity risk, via stress, poor coping strategies (binge eating) and neuroendocrine changes chronic stress, depression, and social adversity further contribute to dysregulated eating leptin resistance (the body not listening to the ‘im full’ hormone) with increasing excess bodyfat lack of sleep, screen time, sedentary life/job, various medications, possibly endocrine disruptors, and prenatal/early life factors play a role SO what do we do about it? We treat obesity with a multi-modal approach that meets the person where they are at. nutrition education! baby step by step changes in foods chosen and consumed, with an RD if possible address environmental factors, try to find a safe space for movement, connect with resources for healthier foods optimize sleep, screen time, eating slowly and mindfully, increase movement throughout the day increase formal exercise, connect with resources needed, or address pain limitations address medical conditions such as hypothyroid or medication induced weight gain address mental health, binge eating and connect with therapists or specialists as needed use prescription medications as indicated and/or consideration for other interventions build a team of support! If you are on a weight loss journey, there are resources and positive practitioners out there ready to help! (And skinnytok aint it.) #weightloss #skinnytok #doctortips
