All stereotypes boil down to the evaluation of groups on two dimensions – how competent a person is and how warm they are. 30 years ago men were seen as logical, decisive and analytical. Women were commonly seen as emotional, hormonal and can’t do numbers. In other words men were more competent than women.Nowadays, we’re asked to look at men’s and women’s strengths. Men are still seen as logical, analytical and decisive. Women though are seen as caring, empathetic and good at relationships. The male and female strengths are complimentary – combine them and you have a great team. However, whilst men are still being described as competent, women are now being described on the warmth dimension. As we all know, in business it is competence that counts and what gets you promoted. There is also something known as the innuendo effect – by not mentioning logical, analytical and decisive when describing the strengths of women, we assume that women don’t have this qualities. Positive stereotypes therefore lead to the same negative outcomes. For a preview contact [email protected] or go to http://bit.ly/Skill_Boosters_GenderBias
