Why would a man from Atlanta, La., drive 1,000 miles to return to Jacksonville, N.C., for a second surgery at Onslow Memorial Hospital? Here's his story: During the Christmas 2009 holiday season, Rodney and his wife Ronda traveled to Onslow County to visit family members. During their visit, Rodney became ill and found himself in the OMH Emergency Department. He was diagnosed with diverticulitis and a perforated bowel. OMH surgeon Dr. John Westbrook removed the affected part of Rodney's colon and performed a temporary colostomy, with the hope that the colostomy could be reversed at a later date. Six months later, Rodney was ready for the colostomy reversal. Although the surgery could have been performed in Louisiana, Rodney chose to return to Jacksonville because he trusted the skills and caring nature of Dr. Westbrook and the staff at OMH.
