Eons ago the Void Lords launched an invasion on the afterlife itself and wanted to take over. We see that it happened in bastion but there are also traces of the void in Maldraxxus as well and no doubt other realms of the Shadowlands as well. Aside from this small side quest this event is in my opinion crucial in regards to what is to come in the Warcraft universe. We see that death had battled the void as well as the Light which means that we might be finally coming into contact with the Void Lords.
