Maria Stephan is a civil resistance scholar and co-lead of the Horizons Project, which focuses on strengthening democracy in the United States. With over 25 years of global experience supporting movements for rights and freedoms, Stephan emphasizes the urgency of confronting rising authoritarianism in the U.S., including attacks on democratic institutions and civil liberties. Drawing from her research with Erica Chenoweth and historical case studies—from the U.S. civil rights movement to struggles in Chile, South Africa, Ukraine, and Poland—Stephan identifies key factors in successful nonviolent movements: 1. Mass, diverse participation across society. 2. A wide range of nonviolent tactics, including protests, boycotts, and civil disobedience. 3. Loyalty shifts among pillars of support like business, religious, and judicial leaders. 4. Resilience in the face of repression, making crackdowns backfire. She stresses the importance of training, organizing, and uniting across differences to resist authoritarianism. Despite the challenges, Stephan believes that movements can prevail because autocrats are often weaker than they appear—and people, when organized, are stronger than they think.
