Stapeliad unboxing - Not aroids but some weird plants in the Apocynaceae family.

Let's start with the APOCYNACAE plant FAMILY. Right away we need to focus on in on the sub family Asclepiadoideae which has some 348 Genera and over 2900 species. They form a group of perennial herbs, shrubs, lianas and rarely trees but also contain a significant number of leafless stem succulents. A great example of convergent evolution as they function very much like the completely unrelated Cacti. They are primarily found in Africa and South America and encompass a variety of fascinating tribes. These include Fockeeae, Asclepiadeae, Eustegieae, Marsdenieae (which notably includes Hoya), and today’s focus, the tribe Ceropegieae. The name Ceropegieae may sound familiar due to the popular houseplant, Ceropegia woodii, commonly known as the String of Hearts. Within the tribe Ceropegieae, there is a significant sub-tribe known as Stapeliinae. This sub-tribe comprises 34 genera, which form the central topic of this video. Over the years, I have gathered species from various genera within this sub-tribe, including examples from Huernia, Duvalia, Orbea, Echidnopsis, Piaranthus, Tavaresia, Hoodia, Caralluma, and the most renowned of them all, Stapelia. These genera showcase an incredible diversity of forms and adaptations, making them captivating additions to any plant collection.
