He explains that there are 2 types of dialysis: hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. In hemodialysis, blood is taken from the body, filtered through a machine, and returned back. For this process, the patient needs an access point. There are 3 options: arteriovenous fistula (created in the hand or leg), perm cath (a synthetic catheter in the central veins), or HD sheath (in emergencies). Peritoneal dialysis involves a catheter placed in the stomach. An arteriovenous fistula is a surgically created connection between an artery and a vein. This allows high blood flow, enlarging the vein for easy puncturing during dialysis.
