The experience of Black Americans is invaluable to any and all efforts to establish Islam in America, because it sheds light on America’s history and character from the colonial period until today. The Black American experience has been characterized by oppression, injustice, and struggle - forging a unique and diverse group of people given to strength, resilience, spirituality, and hope. One cannot tell the story of America without the story of the Black American. Additionally, one cannot tell the story of the Black Americans without the story of the Black American Muslim.The Black American Muslim community has produced internationally recognized personalities and leaders such as Muhammad Ali, Malcolm X, Imam Warith Deen Muhammad, Imam Jamil Al-Amin, and others. Masjid Al-Islam is working to produce eight short messages on issues confronting American society and propose a course of action from a Black Muslim perspective. Hosted by Imam Muhammad Abdul-Jami and a rotating guest speaker or co-host - The Black Muslim Lives Matter series seeks to give voice to Black Muslim perspectives and explore solutions to challenges that face all Muslims living in America. The end goal is to honor the responsibility we all have to establish an authentic, viable Islamic presence in American society.
