This video is about HOW TO TEACH A CHILD TO RIDE A BICYCLE IN 5 MINUTES or How to Ride a Bicycle for the First Time. Here is the secret: Balance on a bike is achieved by making very small left and right adjustments to the handle bars. Find a safe, grass covered area with a very slight downward slope - soft grass for soft landings. Sit your child on the bike. Hold the bike still. Tell the child not to peddle. The child should concentrate only on the handle bars. Have the child practice very rapid zig-zag motions - wiggling the handle bars back and forth, left and right, in tiny increments of only a few degrees -- as fast as possible. (Webster's Dictionary defines "wiggle" as: "to move from side to side with short jerky motions.") Have the child practice that while you hold the bike still. Instruct the child to keep wiggling the handle bars rapidly back and forth while you release the bike and set it in motion slowly down the grassy slope. No peddling! By the third attempt the child will get the "feeling" that the movement of the handle bars is keeping the bike upright and the child will start making the proper adjustments instinctively. Speed is not necessary and is not a factor in balancing the bike. Five minutes. No scrapes, cuts, or bruises. Pass it on . . . I take no responsibility or liability for any injury or damage that may occur from trying this method of learning to ride a bicycle. But, I'm sure that this is far more simple and safe than other approaches. Tom Parke Tom is a grandfather and has taught a few generations of kids how to ride a bike using this method. He made this video because he felt that other YouTube videos were giving overly complex strategies and information.
