This TEDx talk explores how modern food advertising and marketing strategies influence what people eat and how those choices affect long-term health. It reveals how supermarkets and food brands use psychological tactics, packaging, and targeted advertising to encourage the consumption of ultra-processed foods, especially among children. The talk examines how highly processed foods can shape habits, affect the brain’s reward system, and contribute to rising rates of obesity and chronic disease. It also looks at the broader system connecting the food industry and medical treatments, including widely used weight-loss drugs such as Semaglutide. Ultimately, the talk encourages greater awareness of how food choices are influenced by advertising and corporate interests, and challenges audiences to think more critically about what they eat and why. Anika Martínez-Sobral is a part time athlete, part time aspiring chef, who loves looking for ways to simplify the "healthy lifestyle." She enjoys playing basketball, track and feild, cooking, and conducting research on food and its many impacts. After what seemed like a tragedy occurred, Anika's research reached the next level, as her curiosities became one with her own situation. Today, Anika is here to share her findings and spread an important message full of secrets that not many know about. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
