Wouldn’t it be nice if it was easy to create great user experiences? You know, just type a few lines into a prompt and voilà 🎰! No. No, it wouldn’t. At least not from the perspective of the people who create those experiences. While we may lament the challenges, the imperfections, and the compromises that are made in the struggle to make the digital world a better place, we shouldn’t wish them away. Without them we would have no purpose 📼. In episode 34 of #BraveUX, I spoke with Dr. Laura Faulkner. She was the first person to spark that thought in me and she did so by sharing the following quote, one she had read only a few days into her 25+ year UX career: 📝 “It is a simple matter to make things complex. It is a complex matter to make things simple. — Arthur Bloch Expanding on why Arthur’s words had resonated with her, she said: 💬 “It helps me [to] remember that when it’s hard to do user experience design or user experience research, that’s okay. It’s supposed to be hard because it’s hard to make something simple. That’s why we have a job. It’s why we have a profession. It’s why we put this effort into it.” As an aside, if Arthur Bloch sounds familiar, it’s because he’s the author of the Murphy’s Law series of books, including “Murphy's Law, and Other Reasons Why Things Go Wrong!”. And in writing this post, I also discovered that he once said… 📝 “Every solution breeds new problems.” … which is also part of the reason why we have purpose and it’s a good reminder that our work will never be “done”. User experience design is subject to so many variables, including our own internal perceived and real constraints, new technologies, things our competitors do, the whims and wishes of our executives, and the most wondrously dynamic puzzles of all… … can you guest what that is? That’s right. Our users! So, when it gets hard. When you’re sick of having the same conversation for the 40th time in a week. Take a breath 😮💨. Mentally throw your keyboard out the window. Smile. And then remind yourself that everything is as it should be. Now, that better. Isn’t it? You’re welcome 😉.
