Today I installed a group/size 34 battery into my 1989 Jeep Cherokee (instead of the reccomened group/size 58). I did this for a few reasons. 1. The 34 is slightly larger than the 58 and thus has more electric capacity. (Cold cranking ams are also much higher). 2. This seems to be an easy upgrade without much modification. 3. My original 58 is over 6 years old and its now time to buy a new battery. With my 1989 XJ and all the way up to a 2000 they reccomend the group/size 58. However with 2001 and later you will notice the 34 being used. Researching this beforehand I thought I would need to cut/modify the battery tray to accommodate the larger battery, however this was not the case. I didn't actually have to modify anything. This was a direct swap for my Jeep and only took 5 minutes. It seems like newer XJ Cherokee's from 1994 or later have a different battery tray and may need to be cut in order to fit the group/size 34. Disclaimer.
