He's 49 years old but he started working at the very young age of 15. Miguel is originally from Oaxaca State and moved to Mexico City to work. He learned how to shoe shine thanks to his brother in law that taught him everything he knew. On Sundays, Miguel walks around the Jardin del Arte Sullivan (Art Market). The rest of the week, he works in the neighbourhood of Juarez, around 10 min away from the Art Market. The Art Market takes place at a peaceful and pet-friendly park. Artists come to gather and sell their products such as paintings, sculptures, photographs, illustrations, art supplies, etc. This is a great spot for buying art due to the many styles and techniques that the artists offer. This Art Market is close to Insurgentes Av. and Reforma Av., two of the most important avenues in Mexico City. Miguel works with a traditional shoe shine box and uses a park bench for his customers to sit on. Sometimes, customers get their shoes shined while standing on, especially when they're in a rush. My black leather pointed boots needed some shine to match the sunny day. The tips were a bit scratched but Miguel took the time to make them shine and reflect like a mirror.
