This is an 'anniversary' piece, uploaded one year on from starting the channel, and I chose it - along with the two pieces by Carl Vine also uploaded today - because it reflects something of my experience of the last year, which has had a dream-like quality: quiet, curiously unreal, somehow outside of time. 'Dream' is the final number of 'Enfantines', a book of ten pieces for children published in 1924. It has been set for grade 5 (actually ABRSM 2019-20, B:4). Ernest Bloch was born in 1880 in Switzerland and died in 1959 in America. His music often contains Jewish elements, though none are apparent in this piece, which is an inspired example of programme music, beautifully capturing the strange revelatory quality some dreams have. I experimented with a very close setting for this video - I wanted to try to make the listener feel 'inside' the music - and you can see my hands close up. But I forgot precisely how high up the keyboard I play at the end, and my right hand disappears from view in the final bars. All part of the dream, perhaps...
