Burnham-on-Sea has two lighthouses but has had three in its history! The Low Lighthouse began its working life in the 1830s to guide vessels through the Bristol Channel mudflats in conjunction with the taller lighthouse behind it with more traditional flashing white light. For one hundred and thirty seven years both lighthouses worked together. The Low lighthouse uses direction beams of light visible from 12 miles away to provide mariners with safe passage out of the River Parrett.
