Non Duality and Mental Wellbeing - Deepak Chopra & Milena Braticevic PhD Non Duality and Mental Wellbeing Milena Braticevic, PhD Integral Health Postdoctoral Research Associate California Institute for Human Science www.nondualperspectives.com / milenabraticevic Milena holds a PhD in Integral Health from the California Institute for Human Science. Milena’s work explores prevention-oriented methodologies for mental health, sustainability, and wellbeing. Her research on the effects of increasing awareness of nondual consciousness and the natural state in young adults showed significant reduction in symptoms of depression and anxiety and increase in critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration – the key skills required for the future of work. Milena currently teaches her experiential mental resilience program at corporations and educational institutions, including the University of Toronto’s School of Continuing Studies and the University of San Diego’s Professional and Continuing Education. Milena’s mental health literacy programs have helped individuals build resilient minds and have contributed to the reduction of common mental disorders and stigma. Research details: Research abstract and presentation from the Science of Consciousness Conference (Sept 14-18, 2020): Psychophysiological Effects of Increasing Awareness of Nondual Consciousness and the Natural State in Young Adults with Depression and Anxiety Abstract Presentation Currently teaching at: U of San Diego Professional and Continuing Education: Experiential Workshop: Building Mental Resilience in Uncertain Times University of Toronto School of Continuing Studies: Building Mental Resilience in Uncertain Times Talking points: The state of mental health due to COVID-19: increase in moderate to severe levels of anxiety & depression reveals that we are failing to prevent common mental disorders on a large scale. Young adults (18-29 years old) are the most vulnerable. Need for prevention-oriented mental health literacy programs: we need to transform the mind to overcome current challenges and handle increased levels of uncertainty and change. Experiential education in nondual consciousness can be effectively used to prevent clinical anxiety & depression: My research with young adults showed that a program designed to increase nondual consciousness and the experience of the natural state can reduce depression symptoms from clinical level to normal, and anxiety from moderate to mild. What does a prevention-oriented mental health program look like? Learning about the nature of the mind (embodied, emerging, relational), and levels of consciousness. Duality vs. nonduality. Psychological costs of identification and separation. Nondual consciousness as the direct experience of reality beyond the conceptual mind. Why is accessing this level of consciousness important for prevention? The natural state and heart rate variability (HRV), the importance of activating the relaxation response. The challenge of educating people about the need to still the mind and regenerate daily. Young people are especially interested in learning about the philosophy of mind, as it gives them meaning and agency over their mental health. They find learning about nondual consciousness ‘inspiring’, ‘cool’, and ‘different’, compared to traditional mental health programs that only talk about anxiety and depression superficially. Significant progress in psychedelic research shows a promise of nondual states of consciousness for healing. Programs about nondual consciousness can also prepare individuals for alternative healing modalities such as psychedelics, and facilitate integration of experience. Current gap in mental health education indicates the need for consciousness education to enter the mainstream. Professional and continuing education programs at various universities are now open to introducing innovative mental health literacy programs based on the integral health paradigm. These programs are open to everyone and can be delivered online to hundreds/ thousands of individuals. Promise of nondual consciousness education: prevention of anxiety & depression, increased critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration (key skills required for the future of work), increased meaning & agency, reduced need for medication, and reduction of stigma. Encouraging current students of consciousness to think about practical applications of their research to reduce the prevalence of common mental disorders and contribute to the prevention paradigm.
