Top 40 station, 56 WHBQ in Memphis was at this time owned by RKO Radio. And they were bigger than their sister station in Los Angeles, 93 KHJ. Rick Dees was the biggest name on the radio after his 1976 song, Disco Duck became the #1 song in the country. Dees was, "the Mouth of the South" doing mornings on WHBQ. But ever since his visit to 93 KHJ (and American Bandstand among other TV appearances), Rick wanted to move to SoCal to be close to Hollywood. By 1978, 93 KHJ was hurting. So RKO did the inevitable. They transferred Rick Dees to the radio studios connected to the Paramount Studios lot on Melrose Ave to do mornings on 93 KHJ. Here is one of the last shows Rick Dees did on 56 WHBQ in Memphis with his news man, Terrence McKeever. On this aircheck, be warned. You'll hear bits that neither one could ever get away with today.
